  • Who we are

The Spaceship Company (TSC) is an affiliate of Virgin Galactic as a space-system manufacturing organization. Headquartered at Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California, it is building and testing a fleet of WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft and SpaceShipTwo reusable spaceships that, together, form Virgin Galactic’s human spaceflight system. Like many Virgin companies across the world, its team of over 350 talented and dedicated engineers, technicians and professionals are drawn together by a willingness to disrupt and challenge the status quo and deliver innovative aerospace solutions to our customers’ needs. TSC’s extensive capabilities encompass preliminary vehicle design and analysis, manufacturing, ground testing, flight testing and post-delivery support.

    Our Values
TSC and the greater Virgin Organization have a relaxed and informal culture that encourages individuality and innovation.  You will be motivated, enterprising and enthusiastic.  Company culture is such that you need to be able to “check your ego at the door”, be a self-starter and possess a sense of humility.  You will work well under pressure and thrive on being given challenges and responsibility.  You will communicate clearly and be confident and persuasive. You will have a high level of integrity and understand the need of complete confidentiality.

    Who You Are

We are seeking a Contract Aerodynamics-Thermal Engineer for approximately 1 year, and will be responsible for advancing the aerodynamic and external heat transfer models for the suborbital spaceplane SpaceShipTwo. The engineer will also support instrumentation planning, mission control preparation, data processing, and model evaluation for flight testing and vehicle envelope expansion.

    Your Mission

    • Develop external heat transfer models encompassing thermal radiation and convection using in-house simulators, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and finite element models (FEM).
    • Support pre-flight preparation including development of instrumentation plans, test limitations, procedures.
    • Analyze thermal flight test data, compare processed measurements to full-vehicle models, evaluate test hypotheses.
    • Create and use scripted tools to maintain and analyze big-data physics databases in a Linux environment.
    • Develop in-house thermal simulation capabilities using C++ & Matlab.
    • Create requirements and coordinate with other engineering disciplines to support thermal ground testing.

    What you bring

    • Graduate degree in Aerospace Engineering or relevant field. Engineering grade and salary commiserate with experience.
    • At least 3 years of experience in aerospace engineering with proven experience in aerodynamics, simulation development, and thermal analysis.
    • Advanced skills in Matlab, and C++. Understanding of software development best practices.
    • Experience in supersonic computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and meshing with Fun3D and Pointwise.
    • Experience in ground and flight test planning, processing instrumentation data, empirical model development.
    • Experience in finite element modeling with FEMAP.
