Who we are

The Spaceship Company (TSC) is Virgin Galactic’s wholly owned space-system manufacturing organization. Headquartered at Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California, it is building and testing a fleet of WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft and SpaceShipTwo reusable spaceships that, together, form Virgin Galactic’s human spaceflight system. Like many Virgin companies across the world, its team of over 430 talented and dedicated engineers, technicians and professionals are drawn together by a willingness to disrupt and challenge the status quo and deliver innovative aerospace solutions to our customers’ needs. TSC’s extensive capabilities encompass preliminary vehicle design and analysis, manufacturing, ground testing, flight testing and post-delivery support.

Our Values
TSC and the greater Virgin Organization have a relaxed and informal culture that encourages individuality and innovation.  You will be motivated, enterprising and enthusiastic.  Company culture is such that you need to be able to “check your ego at the door”, be a self-starter and possess a sense of humility.  You will work well under pressure and thrive on being given challenges and responsibility.  You will communicate clearly and be confident and persuasive. You will have a high level of integrity and understand the need of complete confidentiality.

Who You Are
The Spaceship Company (TSC) is seeking an experienced and inspired Program Manager to lead the design, build and test program for the next WhiteKnightTwo to go into service after VMS Eve. As the first stage of our Space Flight System, WhiteKnightTwo is a unique platform with incredible capability.  In leading the program, the PM will build and lead a team that will optimize the design for performance and reliability enhancements, improve manufacturability and deliver a vehicle in line with customer requirements. The PM has the opportunity to build upon lessons learned from the Unity and Etta/Artie programs to continually improve TSC’s program execution. Naturally, the Program Manager will work closely with leadership and teams across the company to ensure the program is well planned and executed, whilst ensuring compliance with company’s policies, procedures and overall objectives. You will have an unwavering commitment to successful program execution.

Your Mission

  • Implement a Program Management Plan for the delivery of the next WK2, including all program phases from PDR, CDR, first flight and delivery. Develop the program management toolsets and processes necessary for successful program execution, leveraging existing TSC tools where applicable.
  • Ensure scope is clearly defined with the customer, Virgin Galactic, and a robust configuration management process is in place to manage and define program scope. Encompass within a Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP). Manage and preparation for verification of a pre-defined deliverable list.
  • Deliver an optimized WK2 design that address customer requirements – in particular manufacturability, reduced weight, higher release speed, higher payload capability, reproducibility and improved serviceability.
  • Working with program planning resources, develop a fully resource-loaded Integrated Master Schedule (IMS) for the full program with sufficient fidelity to track progress. Develop proposals for executive management for annual program budgets.
  • Actively manage a program risk register that encompasses technical and programmatic risks.
  • Working with supply chain leadership, develop and execute a supply chain strategy for purchase and receipt of all third party materials and provisions. Validate current make/buy decisions as they pertain to the delivery of the next WK2.
  • Working with manufacturing leadership, develop and execute a manufacturing strategy and detailed plan for fabrication and assembly of WK2.
  • Issue regular program updates to stakeholders and senior management highlighting progress, status of key risks and schedule and cost metrics versus baseline plan.
  • Build a program leadership team that can assist in executing the plan in line with requirements. Give that leadership team the tools, assistance, plans and coaching to be successful.

What you bring

  • B.S degree in engineering; Advanced degree in Business or similar is desirable.
  • Significant project management experience in evolved technology aerospace and aircraft development/modification programs.
  • Certification through Project Management Institute (PMP or PgMP) desired.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of project management principles, tools and procedures for measuring project/program success.
  • Effective results in schedule, cost, & risk management.
  • Solid leadership and management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent customer service and interface skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams in project based environments.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and MS Project.
